Top 5 Kaiju I Want to See in the Monsterverse

With the announcement of a sequel to the much loved Godzilla vs. Kong (2021) there is a lot of talk about what other monsters should be featured in movies. Here are the top five that I want to see!

Number 5:

Ebirah -

The giant lobster Ebirah would be great to see in a new monsterverse film, especially one with Kong in it since the film (Godzilla vs. The Sea Monster a.k.a. Ebirah! Horror of the Deep) was supposed to feature Kong instead. We could finally see the two of them duke it out as was originally intended. Plus it would be nice to see a battle that takes place partially underwater, though maybe that part would be better if it were against Godzilla instead.

Number 4:

Titanosaurus -

The dinosaur kaiju whose only appearance so far is Terror of Mechagodzilla, making him and Megalon the only Showa-era kaiju not featured in a sequel. Jet Jaguar and a version of Gabara were featured in the Singular Point anime.

I love Titanosaurus, he looks really cool. His wind-tail attack is very unique. Too many kaiju have generic beam attacks. Also, dinosaurs make the best kaiju. He would be a great warm-up for Kong, after all, fighting dinosaurs is what made King Kong famous in the first place!

Number 3:

Varan -

One of the earliest kaiju (predated only by King Kong, Godzilla, Anguirus, and Rodan) Varan has never been given his fair due. After his debut film, his only other appearance was a brief cameo in Destroy All Monsters, though he did appear in the Nintendo game Monster of Monsters.

Varan would make a formidable opponent against any monster. He can do it all, swim, walk, fly. He is protected by large, sharp, porcupine like spikes. Plus he would be especially interesting to see go up against Godzilla since despite their long history with Toho the two have never faced off before!

There was consideration of a Godzilla vs. Varan in 1994-5 but that unfortunately fell through. Kaneko considered Varan along with Anguirus in an older script for Godzilla, Mothra, King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack, but they were replaced with the more popular monsters mentioned in the film's title.

Number 2:

Frankenstein -

The original 1962 King Kong vs. Godzilla was at first scripted to be King Kong vs. Frankenstein. The idea was the brain child of King Kong creator Wilis O' Brien, but he had trouble selling the script. Long story short, Toho acquired it, replaced Frankenstein with Godzilla and the rest was history.

However, Toho would go on to make their own Frankenstein movie. At first they considered Godzilla vs. Frankenstein, but for whatever reason decided to instead create a new Godzilla-like monster, the fan-favorite Baragon, who would be on this list if he hadn't appeared in Godzilla, Mothra, King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack. The movie came out in 1965 and was titled Frankenstein vs. Baragon but is better known here in the States as Frankenstein Conquers the World.

The idea of a kaiju-sized Frankenstein monster is brilliant and I am shocked that it hasn't been used more often. Frankenstein Conquers the World is one of the best kaiju films and I'd love to see the monster return. Then we could finally see both Godzilla vs. Frankenstein and O' Brien's original vision, King Kong vs. Frankenstein!

Perhaps then they could also include other classic monsters such as a werewolf, which Godzilla has already faced-off against in the infamous fan-film Legendary Beast Wolfman vs. Godzilla.

Number 1:

Gamera!

My favorite kaiju of them all the mighty Gamera! Like Varan he can walk, swim, and even fly! But whether on land, sea, or air Gamera is much swifter! He can retreat into his hard shell for protection and breath powerful flames like an ancient dragon. Gamera is insanely powerful and can take a beating like no other kaiju yet keep on going. Both Kong and Godzilla would have a tough time facing off against this terrible turtle!

Not seen since 2006's Gamera the Brave, he is long overdue a new film! In 2015 (Gamera's 50th anniversary) a brilliant proof of concept film was released but sadly nothing ever came of it...
